Clean water - the basis for sustainable aid

Water technology to be deployed in Pakistan

Celle, 6 September 2010 - As the main priority of the current emergency relief measures of the German government, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the German Red Cross have sent expert teams with water treatment plants to the flood-hit regions of Pakistan. To ensure the supply of refugees with clean drinking water and thus prevent the further spread of diseases, both organisations are deploying Berkefeld water treatment plants

At the request of THW, Berkefeld, a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, prepared for transport eight tons of aid material for the water treatment within only four days. The material is necessary for the operation of the two Berkefeld water treatment plants that THW is transporting to Pakistan. With the aid of the two systems, up to 280,000 litres of drinking water a day can be treated. That is enough to supply a total of 20,000 people. The drinking water treatment plants are to be deployed in the Multan region in the South of Punjab province. With a population of 1.3 million, Multan is Pakistan's sixth-largest city. The Punjab - also called the country's'breadbasket' - is one of the regions most badly affected by the floods. Supplying the refugees with clean water is a fundamental precondition in order to prevent the further spread of infectious diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. On this basis, further support such as the building of houses and supply facilities will follow.

The two plants that THW has taken to Pakistan are TWA 6 drinking water treatment plants. These highly-mobile systems consist of a chemical pre-processing and a precoat filtration with subsequent depot chlorination. The robust technology is ideally suitable for the safe treatment of all surface water without salt content.

Five other Berkefeld water treatment plants have already arrived in Pakistan with the German Red Cross teams and are being used for supplying refugee camps. The THW also used Berkefeld technology on Haiti for the emergency supply of clean water for the earthquake survivors. Some of these plants are now being made available to the local authorities there to build up a permanent water supply.

Berkefeld, based in Celle, a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, has for many decades supplied international aid organisations and armed services with mobile plants for the treatment of drinking water and processing of wastewater. The technologies range from simple drip filters to reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration units with ceramic membranes.
